Kwon Ji-yong, popularly known as G-Dragon is a singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer, fashion icon, entrepreneur and is often dubbed as the “King of K-pop.” The leader of the South Korean Kpop band BIGBANG, G-Dragon started his journey to stardom at the age of 12 and worked as a trainee for the next 6 years. Debuting at the age of 18 with 4 other members, BIGBANG quickly rose through the charts of the Korean music industry and became popular among the vast majority.
The logo has been around since G-Dragon’s full solo album; ‘Coup d’etat’ released on September 13th 2013.
It looks simple but it’s actually quite meaningful. Breaking it down it is essentially a “G” and “D” but that’s not all there is to the concept. So then, what does the logo mean to GD? . We know it’s an extension of him, another side of him that he wanted to portray to his fans. Articles have already told us that it’s his sense of emptiness as a modern day icon.
That’s just a piece of it though. The concept GD looked for in this brand is “A Utopia that we have yet to reach.” So what does that mean really? A “Utopia” is defined as a perfect society or paradise. GD hopes to use his influence in order to make the world a little like the paradise he dreams of? It could happen, but maybe not in our lifetime. In essence GD wants complete peace but he also knows that it will take some time. In a sense we live in false peace. There always seems to be evil lurking around the corner to keep the Utopian society GD hopes for at bay. So we live our lives in this false peace even though we are aware something will always be missing: “PEACEMINUSONE”. Deep right?
The Fashion Label
In 2016, G-dragon collaborated with the brand 8 Seconds, part of the Samsung C&T Fashion Group, designing his first street fashion collection. The collection featured innovative “genderless” designs, suitable for both men and women. In October the same year, G-Dragon launched his personal fashion brand, Peaceminusone as an online store, with a collection that includes tees, caps, jewelry, and in-ear headphones. Later, the line was launched as a physical store at the Dover Street Market in London and in Seoul.
G-Dragon Peaceminusone X Nike Collaboration
Nike Air Force 1 Low “Para-Noise”
“I couldn’t afford them, so I would always pass the Nike store and admire them with my eyes and heart only. For those who loved hip-hop culture, oversized clothes, hats and matching-colored AF1s was the uniform.”
Progressing as a performer and blossoming into a worldwide phenomenon, G-DRAGON has made the Air Force 1 an integral part of his uniform. Taking a closer look at the G-Dragon-designed PEACEMINUSONE x Nike “Para-Noise” Air Force 1, both the Swoosh and tongue have been constructed in white pebbled leather while other parts of the uppers arrive in premium leather.
Black paint can be a found on the bottom of the out-sole, heel and sides of the sneaker, appearing as if they have been haphazardly applied by hand. The entire black upper of the shoes have also been treated to a special lacquer coating that will rub off over time, revealing G-Dragon’s hidden artwork. Branding arrives in the form of PEACEMINUSONE’s “daisy” logo embroidered at the tongue, a crossed out PEACEMINUSONE logo on the inside of the collar, and Nike Air logos on the mid-sole, heel tab, and out-sole.
G-dragon has mentioned how he loved Nike Air Force1 as a child and he would stare at them from outside the store as he could not buy them.
It was truly a big point in his career when he collaborated with Nike. How inspiring is that?
