Chinese New Year fun facts that you should know

The 25th of January 2020, marks the beginning of the year 4717 on the Chinese calendar.

The Chinese New Year is celebrated during the second new moon after the winter solstice. It is celebrated for a full 15 days until the full moon.

Legend has it the Lord Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on the New Years Day and named a year each after the twelve animals that came.

Animals in the Chinese Calendar are a dog, pig/boar, rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, and rooster. This year happens to be the year of the rat.

There is a tradition that includes giving cash in a red envelope called Hongbao, to children, bachelors, and spinsters.
